ISRO Chief S Somanath Diagnosed with Cancer on Aditya-L1 Launch Day

India’s Space Research Organization (ISRO) head, S Somanath, revealed his cancer diagnosis on the day of the Aditya-L1 launch. On September 2, the Sun-studying Aditya-L1 mission was launched atop PSLV-C57. Amidst the excitement surrounding this momentous occasion, Somanath’s personal health took an unexpected turn.

A Shocking Discovery

Somanath recalled, “I performed a scan in the morning of the day Aditya-L1 was launched,” during a Malayalam interview with Tarmak Media House. It was then that he became aware of a growth in his stomach. The diagnosis came as soon as the launch took place. Following this revelation, Somanath underwent an operation and subsequently received chemotherapy. He shared the news with his family, acknowledging the initial shock it brought to them.

Resilience and Triumph

Despite the challenges, Somanath views his journey with cancer as a solvable challenge rather than an obstacle. He declares, “But now, I perceive cancer and its treatment as a solution. There is a message that it is not incurable. I will be undergoing regular check-ups every year. I will be undergoing scans. But now, I am completely cured. I have resumed my duties.”

A Distinguished Career

S Somanath, who currently serves as the secretary of the Department of Space and chairman of the Space Commission, has a distinguished career in space research. His expertise in system engineering of launch vehicles has significantly contributed to projects like PSLV and GSLV Mk-III.

Understanding the Disease

The cancer that Somanath faced is not uncommon. Hereditary diffuse gastric cancers (HDGC) account for 1% to 3% of stomach (gastric) cancers. The CDH1 gene mutation causes this disorder. Individuals born with the HDGC genetic mutation have an increased chance of developing stomach cancer early in life.

Somanath’s determination and resilience serve as an inspiration, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, hope and triumph are possible.
