whta is Lakshagriha –
Lakshagriha is a palace made of lacquer featured in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It was built by the Kauravas as a trap to kill the Pandavas, who managed to escape through a tunnel. The site of Lakshagriha is believed to be an ancient mound in Barnava village, Uttar Pradesh, which was recently recognized as a historical and religious place for Hindus by a court verdict

main arguments –
The Muslim side claimed that the ancient mound in Barnava village had a tomb of a Sufi saint named Sheikh Badruddin and a graveyard that belonged to them. They said that the tomb was 600 years old and the graveyard was a waqf property granted by the ruling Shah of that era. They filed a case in 1970 to prevent the Hindu side from encroaching on the site and performing religious rituals there.

The Hindu side argued that the ancient mound was the location of Lakshagriha, a palace of lac where the Pandavas escaped a murder plot by the Kauravas in the Mahabharata epic. They said that the site was a historical and religious place for Hindus and that the tomb and the graveyard were later additions. They produced an official gazette dated 1920 by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) that mentioned the mound as Lakshagriha and a scene of the Mahabharata.

court decision –
The court examined the evidence and records presented by both parties and ruled in favor of the Hindu side on February 5, 2024. The court recognized the mound as Lakshagriha and granted the ownership rights to the Hindu side. The court dismissed the claims of the Muslim side regarding the tomb and the graveyard, as they could not provide any proof of their existence or waqf status in 1920. The court also noted that the ASI had declared the site as a protected monument and had found ancient artefacts during excavation.

The verdict has attracted a lot of attention and controversy, as it involves the cultural and historical heritage of the region. The Hindu side welcomed the judgment and said that it was a victory for truth and justice. They said that they would develop the site as a pilgrimage and tourism destination for Hindus. The Muslim side expressed disappointment and said that they would review the judgment and consider appealing it. They said that the verdict was unfair and violated their religious rights. The police have increased security measures at the site and have appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony

asi records –
One of the ASI Records that was relevant for the Lakshagriha case was the Official Gazette dated December 12, 1920, which mentioned the ancient mound in Barnava village as Lakshagriha and a scene of the Mahabharata epic. This document supported the claim of the Hindu side that the site was a historical and religious place for Hindus. The court relied on this document to recognize the mound as Lakshagriha and grant the ownership rights to the Hindu side
