Parents Outraged by Sudden Hike in School Fees in Hyderabad
Parents in Hyderabad are facing a tough time as many schools in the city have announced a steep hike in fees for the next academic year. Some schools have increased the fees by as much as 65%, leaving the parents struggling to afford the education of their children.
According to a report by TOI¹, a parent of a nursery student from a renowned school in Bachupally revealed that the fee for the 2024 academic year has been raised to 3.7 lakh from the previous year’s fee of 2.3 lakh. The school administration justified the increase, citing the shift to an IB curriculum, which they claimed was non-negotiable.
Another parent said that the average fees for admission into Class 1 in Hyderabad is in the range of 1-4.5 lakh per annum, depending on the board⁴. Apart from the annual fees, the schools also impose additional charges such as extracurricular fees, library fees, and lab fees. Some schools also mandate students to purchase books from the schools themselves.
The schools claim that the fee hike is necessary to increase the salaries of the staff in line with the market rates and to retain the experienced teachers amid the growing competition. However, many parents argue that the fees charged by the schools are not proportional to the quality of education and facilities provided. They also question the need for such a drastic change in the curriculum without consulting the parents.
The parents have expressed their outrage and frustration over the fee hike on social media and have demanded the government to intervene and regulate the fees of the private schools. They have also appealed to the schools to reconsider their decision and to provide some relief to the parents in these difficult times
