There is a controversy between a Karnataka MLA and Infosys, a leading IT company in India. The MLA, Arvind Bellad, accused Infosys of not creating any jobs on the 58 acres of land that it acquired in Hubballi, his constituency. He demanded that the land be taken back by the government. He also said that Infosys only engaged in gardening and landscaping on the land.
Infosys had received the land at a discounted rate of Rs 35 lakh per acre, with the promise of generating employment for the local people. However, Bellad claimed that he could not face the farmers who gave up their lands for Infosys, as their children did not get any jobs. He also tweeted that Infosys betrayed the people of North Karnataka with empty promises and trees.
The Karnataka government said that it would investigate the issue and take action if Infosys failed to deliver on its commitments. The IT-BT Minister, Priyank Kharge, suggested that incentives could be withdrawn in such cases. The Industries Minister, MB Patil, said that he would issue notices and impose penalties, including reclaiming the land, if no progress was made
